Love & Friendship Adoption Center Internships

The Humane Society of Northeast Iowa Love & Friendship Adoption Center offers internships for college students each semester, January and Summer. Please see the description of internships below. Applications, at the bottom of this page, are due as follows:


Fall Internships: Applications due June 1, with notification June 15


Spring & January Internships: Applications due November 11, with Notification November 24

Humane Society of Northeast Iowa (HSNEI)

Media Internship


HSNEI is an animal rescue organization that cares for over 300 animals per year. We are looking for interns who would like to gain experience in digital communications across multiple channels including email, web, and social media. The intern will have the opportunity to assist various initiatives that will improve the awareness, outreach, sponsorship, and general presence for HSNEI’s animal shelter and companion animal initiatives.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Using online tools to support the communications of HSNEI with a focus on the expansion of social networking efforts
  • Assisting in developing original, thoughtful content for the e-newsletter, social media and web platforms
  • Creating an active HSNEI blog for the shelter
  • Participating in HSNEI media strategy sessions
  • Writing press releases and developing story ideas to attract media
  • Volunteer with animals at the shelter to gain insight to HSNEI’s work and mission


Strong intern applicants have a passion for communications and social media and meet the following requirements:

  • Strong communication, writing, interpersonal, and research skills
  • Able to work well independently, show initiative and use good judgment
  • Knowledge of social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and blogging channels
  • Previous experience in a non-profit organization, animal protection/advocacy organization, or animal shelter is a plus.


Interns are expected to commit to 10 hours per week for approximately 15 weeks in Fall or Spring, and January and Summer internships can work up to 36 hours per week. Interns may arrange to receive course credit for this unpaid internship.

Interns must sign a volunteer waiver and release of liability. The position is located at the HSNEI Love & Friendship Adoption Center in Decorah, Iowa.


Humane Society of Northeast Iowa (HSNEI)

Animal Care Internship (2 positions available per semester)


HSNEI is an animal rescue organization that cares for over 300 animals per year. We are looking for interns to help with upkeep and daily care of the animals at the Love & Friendship Adoption Center. Animal Care Interns have the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience and exposure to the operations of an animal adoption center. This opportunity will expose interns to the animal care and behavior processes of shelter operations. Participation in this program will allow students to develop transferable, real-world skills in the areas of customer service, animal handling, animal behavior, animal health, behavior modification, and teamwork.


Interns are expected to work a regularly scheduled shift that includes, but is not limited to:

  • Daily care of animals including: kennel/cage cleaning, feeding, watering, dishes, laundry
  • Canine and Feline enrichment
  • Behavior evaluation and modification
  • Assisting with behavior classes
  • Reporting medical and behavioral observations
  • Intake exams and assessments

Visual Media Internship

HSNEI is an animal rescue organization that cares for over 300 animals per year. We are looking for interns who can take photos and make videos featuring our adoptable animals and Adoption Center events to be posted on YouTube and our website to increase adoptions.


Strong intern applicants have a passion for visual media and meet the following requirements:

  • An HD video camera with basic knowledge of editing, a computer with Internet access and basic knowledge of Internet posting
  • Strong writing skills to write descriptions of animals that will appeal to potential adopters
  • Ability to work well independently, show initiative and use good judgment
  • Previous experience in a non-profit organization, animal protection/advocacy organization, or animal shelter is a plus
  • Top priority: volunteers must have an abiding love for animals, a commitment to helping them find the loving homes they deserve, and an understanding that professional-looking photos and videos DO lead to adoptions!
  • Volunteer with animals at the shelter to gain insight to HSNEI’s work and mission
